Lily of the Valley is a perennial herbaceous plant. It has slender rhizomes that spread horizontally. The leaves are elliptical with sharp tips and slightly narrow bases.
The flower stems are tall and slightly bent outwards. The bracts are lanceolate, membranous, and shorter than the flower stalks. The flowers are bell-shaped and hang downward in creamy white.
The berries are spherical and turn red when ripe, containing 4 to 6 seeds. The flowering period is from May to June, while the fruiting period spans from June to July. The flower resembles a bell and carries a fragrance reminiscent of orchids, hence the name Lily of the Valley.
The plant, native to the northern hemisphere's temperate regions, is found in Northeast, North, Northwest, East, and Central China. It thrives in well-draining, humus-rich, and slightly acidic sandy loam soil, but can also grow in neutral to mildly alkaline soil conditions.
