Badminton, an indoor sport that gained popularity in the early 16th century, is considered the fastest racket sport globally. With simple and easy-to-understand rules, all you need to play are a net, a shuttlecock, a racket, and a grasp of the basic rules.
To begin, a player serves the shuttlecock to the opponent's court, and the game unfolds as the opponent returns the serve. This time-honored game has evolved into an Olympic sport played worldwide. Before diving into the game, it's essential for players to familiarize themselves with the rules, knowing where and how to hit the shuttlecock.
Whether you choose singles or doubles, badminton accommodates both. In singles, two players face off, while in doubles, four players can form teams and compete. It's crucial to note that players cannot select their playing side, adhering to a fundamental rule in badminton.
The game revolves around a racket strung with strings and a feathered shuttlecock with a hard base. Players must hit the hard base, not the feathers. The serve, the starting stroke of each point, should be underhand and below the waist to comply with badminton rules.
Before any match, a coin toss determines the start, eliminating the need for disputes over who serves first. The winner of the previous round serves in the next round. The net is a crucial component, and hitting it or the racket touching it before the shuttlecock hits the ground results in the opponent scoring a point.
Certain guidelines exist for serving, such as not stepping on the white border around the court or using hands to touch the shuttlecock. A violation of these rules constitutes a foul, with no second chances.
Maintaining sportsmanship is vital in badminton. Players must refrain from encouraging or interfering with their opponent's serve, and any form of bullying is unacceptable. The ball must land within the court boundaries, and if it goes beyond the line, the opponent scores a point.
In official badminton games, one game consists of twenty-one points, and winning two out of three games secures victory. If tied at 20 points, a tiebreaker is initiated, requiring a player to score two consecutive points to win, with a maximum of thirty points.
By understanding and adhering to these basic rules, players can enjoy a competitive yet friendly game of badminton, whether it's a casual match with friends or an official tournament.
