Rondane National Park offers a rewarding multi-day hiking experience across expansive valleys, rugged mountain terrain, and clear alpine lakes.
The classic circuit covers approximately 60 kilometres and is commonly completed over four days, providing experienced hikers with a well-defined route through one of Norway’s notable mountain landscapes.
The itinerary combines varied scenery with established trails and overnight stays, while a seasonal boat crossing adds a distinctive element to the journey.

Rondane National Park

The Four-Day Route

The circuit begins at Spranget, where a gravel access route leads approximately 6 kilometres to Rondvassbu. The walk provides a gradual introduction to the landscape before reaching the first mountain lodge.
From Rondvassbu, hikers can cross Rondvatnet by passenger boat before continuing toward Øvre Dørålseter. The crossing takes approximately 15 minutes and connects the southern and northern sections of the circuit.
The route then continues from Øvre Dørålseter to Bjørnhollia through the mountain valleys. The standard route takes around seven hours, making this the longest walking day of the itinerary.
From Bjørnhollia, the trail continues through Illmanndalen to Rondvassbu. This section is approximately 12.5 kilometres and takes about four hours of effective walking time. The final return from Rondvassbu to Spranget completes the circuit.

When to Go

The classic hiking season generally runs from June through September. During this period, summer trails, staffed lodges, and seasonal transport services are available, although operating periods can vary.
Mountain conditions can change rapidly, so hikers should prepare with suitable footwear, warm layers, waterproof clothing, navigation equipment, a headlamp, and sufficient food and water.

How to Get There

Spranget is one of the main access points for the circuit. It can be reached through Mysusæter, while Otta serves as an important transport connection for travelers arriving by public transport.
From Otta, seasonal local services can provide onward connections toward Mysusæter and the trailhead. Travelers arriving by car can drive toward Mysusæter and continue to the designated parking area at Spranget.
Rondvassbu has no direct road connection. The final approach from Spranget is made on foot or by bicycle along the gravel access route.
The seasonal passenger boat across Rondvatnet costs approximately $16 one way.

Accommodation

The circuit includes three principal mountain-lodge areas: Rondvassbu, Øvre Dørålseter, and Bjørnhollia.
Rondvassbu provides a convenient starting or finishing point near Rondvatnet. Øvre Dørålseter offers an overnight stop on the northern section, while Bjørnhollia fits naturally into the route before the return toward Rondvassbu.
Accommodation costs vary according to room type, meal arrangements, and seasonal rates. Travelers can generally budget around $115–$180 per person per night for staffed mountain-lodge accommodation with meals.
Reservations are recommended during the busiest part of the hiking season, particularly when the itinerary depends on specific overnight stops.

Local Food

Mountain lodges provide convenient meal arrangements throughout the circuit, with breakfast, packed lunches, and evening meals available according to the accommodation plan.
A reasonable budget for meals is approximately $35–$60 per person per day, depending on the lodge and meal arrangements.
Travelers with dietary requirements should confirm available meal options with their chosen lodge before arrival.

Planning the Journey

The itinerary works best when walking distances, overnight stays, and transport are arranged together.
The Øvre Dørålseter–Bjørnhollia stage is the longest standard walking day, taking approximately seven hours. Starting early allows sufficient time for rest stops and changes in pace.
The Rondvatnet boat should also be incorporated into the schedule because departures operate at specific times. Checking the latest timetable before departure helps keep the itinerary on track.
Travelers who prefer a more relaxed experience can add an extra day, allowing greater flexibility around the longer walking stages.

A Classic Rondane Experience

Rondane’s four-day circuit combines mountain valleys, established hiking trails, lake scenery, and comfortable lodge accommodation in a compact itinerary. The varied terrain and clearly defined stages create a practical way to experience the national park on foot.
For hikers seeking a structured journey through Norway’s mountain landscape, the circuit offers a memorable combination of scenic walking, lake views, and comfortable overnight stays.
