Formula 1 returns to the Autódromo José Carlos Pace for the 2026 São Paulo Grand Prix, bringing the championship to one of its most challenging circuits. Better known as Interlagos, the Brazilian venue is recognised for its elevation changes, technical corners, and opportunities for overtaking.
Beyond the race itself, this year's event offers several interesting storylines, including Lewis Hamilton's career milestone, the arrival of a Brazilian rookie, and the possibility of changing weather conditions influencing team strategies.

Interlagos: A Circuit With a Challenging Layout

The São Paulo circuit measures 4.309 kilometres and features 15 corners. Drivers must complete 71 laps, covering a total race distance of approximately 305.879 kilometres. One of its defining characteristics is its elevation. The track includes uphill and downhill sections that require drivers to adjust their braking and acceleration throughout a lap. Its anti-clockwise direction also places different physical demands on drivers compared with many other circuits.
Interlagos first hosted a Formula 1 World Championship race in 1973. The venue was built in 1938 and later received its current official name in honour of Brazilian driver José Carlos Pace.
Valtteri Bottas holds the circuit's lap record with a time of 1:10.540, established in 2018. Michael Schumacher remains the most successful driver at this venue, with four Grand Prix victories.

Drivers With Impressive Records in Brazil

Several familiar names have enjoyed considerable success at Interlagos. Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have each secured three victories at the circuit, putting them among the most successful drivers currently competing. The pole-position record is also shared by several notable competitors. Ayrton Senna, Mika Häkkinen, Rubens Barrichello, Hamilton, and Verstappen have each claimed three poles at the venue.
Recent results provide another interesting comparison. Lando Norris secured pole position and victory in 2025, while Verstappen won the 2024 and 2023 editions. George Russell took the 2022 victory, and Hamilton finished first in 2021. These previous performances make the upcoming weekend particularly interesting, as several experienced drivers will be looking to add another strong result to their records.

Tyre Selection and Race Strategy

Tyre management will be an important consideration throughout the weekend. Pirelli has selected the C3 hard, C4 medium, and C5 soft compounds for the 2026 event. This selection is one step softer than the combination used at the previous year's race. Another factor is the resurfacing work completed between Turns 3 and 5 and Turns 8 and 9. Changes to the track surface may influence grip and tyre behaviour, particularly during longer driving stints.
Teams will use the practice sessions to understand how the revised surfaces affect tyre wear and performance. Finding the right balance between speed and durability will be important when deciding how long each set of tyres should remain in use.

Weather and Safety Car Possibilities

Weather conditions are another element that could influence the outcome. Interlagos is known for experiencing changing temperatures and rainfall, meaning teams must prepare for different track conditions. The availability of intermediate and full wet tyres could become important if rain arrives during the weekend. Changing conditions may also affect braking performance, grip, and decisions about when to make pit stops.
Historical figures also highlight the possibility of interruptions. Based on the previous seven races at the circuit, the estimated Safety Car probability is 86%, while the Virtual Safety Car probability stands at 57%. The circuit recorded 96 overtakes during the 2025 race. Its layout offers several opportunities for drivers to challenge competitors, making strategic decisions particularly important.

Championship Battles and a Brazilian Debut

Although Kimi Antonelli secured his first Drivers' Championship at the previous round in Mexico City, the battle for the remaining positions is still developing. Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, and Charles Leclerc remain among the drivers attracting attention in the standings. Verstappen's recent performances have strengthened his position, while Hamilton and Russell will be looking to respond.
The Constructors' Championship also remains an important focus. Mercedes are in a strong position against Ferrari and need only a small points advantage during the São Paulo weekend to secure the title. Another storyline involves Brazilian driver Rafael Camara, who is scheduled to make his Formula 1 debut with Haas, replacing Esteban Ocon. Racing at his home event will make the occasion particularly meaningful as he begins his career in the sport's top category.
The 2026 São Paulo Grand Prix brings together an interesting combination of circuit challenges, championship developments, and individual milestones. Interlagos remains a demanding venue where tyre management, changing weather, and precise driving can influence the final result.
With Hamilton approaching a major career milestone, Camara preparing for his debut, and several teams competing for important championship positions, the Brazilian weekend offers plenty of reasons for Formula 1 fans to follow the action.
