Le Monal is a historic mountain hamlet in France, above Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise in the Savoie region.
At approximately 1,874 metres, the settlement combines traditional stone-and-timber architecture with forest paths and sweeping Alpine scenery.
Two established approaches make Le Monal suitable for different hiking plans. The shorter trail begins at Chenal, while the longer route starts from the Sainte-Foy resort area. In autumn, the larch forests add warm seasonal colour to the mountain landscape.

Le Monal

Choose the Right Route

The Chenal route covers approximately 4.1 kilometres and gains around 190 metres, with a walking time of about two hours. The trail passes through La Combaz before reaching the hamlet and follows the same route back.
The longer approach from the Sainte-Foy resort area covers approximately 8 kilometres, with around 400 metres of ascent and a walking time of about two and a half hours. A further marked option from Les Mélèzes extends to approximately 9 kilometres.
For a shorter excursion, Chenal provides a practical starting point. The longer approaches create a more substantial mountain outing.

Discover Le Monal

Le Monal is known for its traditional Alpine buildings, stone walls, timber structures, slate roofs, narrow paths, and historic water features. The settlement sits in an open mountain setting with views toward the surrounding peaks and the Mont Pourri glaciers.
The surrounding larch woodland becomes particularly striking in autumn as the foliage changes colour. The combination of golden trees, traditional buildings, and high mountain scenery gives the walk a distinctive seasonal character.

Prepare for the Trail

Autumn conditions can vary considerably in the mountains. Check the weather and current trail conditions before leaving, particularly later in the season when temperatures can fall quickly at higher elevations.
Sturdy hiking footwear, warm layers, waterproof protection, water, and sufficient food are recommended. Carry basic navigation equipment and allow enough daylight for the complete route.
Le Monal has limited visitor facilities, so prepare supplies before beginning the hike.

How to Get There

By car, Chenal is the most convenient starting point for the shorter route, with parking near the trailhead. Allow around $15–$25 for fuel for a local return journey, depending on the vehicle and starting point.
By public transport, Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the main regional transport hub for Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise. Regional bus fares can cost approximately $5–$15 per person each way, depending on the service and travel date. Check the current autumn timetable before travelling.
The hiking routes are free to access.

Accommodation

Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise is a convenient base for a Le Monal hiking trip, offering apartments and mountain accommodation in both the village and resort areas.
Accommodation can typically range from around $110 to $150 per night, although the final price depends on travel dates, season, property size, and occupancy. Staying nearby allows an early start and provides additional time to explore the surrounding area.

Local Food

Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise offers a selection of Alpine dishes and lighter options, including vegetable dishes, salads, fresh pasta, omelets, cheese-based dishes, bread, fruit, and pastries.
A meal generally costs around $15–$30 per person, depending on the establishment and menu. Prices can vary throughout the season.
For the hike, carry a packed lunch, snacks, and water because Le Monal has limited dining facilities.

A Memorable Alpine Walk

Le Monal combines traditional mountain architecture, autumn larch forests, and glacier-framed scenery in a compact hiking destination. The Chenal trail suits a shorter outing, while the longer approaches offer additional distance and elevation.
With the right route, suitable equipment, and careful preparation, Le Monal provides an engaging way to experience the French Alps during the autumn season.
